Sharon Stone kicks China when it’s down

May 29, 2008 at 4:26 pm (Entertainment, Environment, News) (, , , , , , )

Luxury retailer Christian Dior has pulled advertisements featuring Sharon Stone from stores across China after the actress suggested the country’s earthquake was “bad karma” for Beijing’s policies in Tibet.

At least 68,000 people died in the May 12 quake in southwest China, which came months after unrest in Tibet that sparked an international outcry over Beijing’s handling of the predominantly Buddhist region, which Communist troops entered in 1950.

“Due to some customer reaction we have decided to pull her image from all of the department stores and from all of China,” Christian Dior China said in a statement. (news)

Tasmania hospitals under siege from “code black” alarms

May 29, 2008 at 4:22 pm (Australia, News, health) (, , , , , , )

More than 300 so-called code black alarms were triggered in Tasmania’s public hospitals last year in response to incidents of aggression.

Almost 200 of them came from the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The alarms are raised by nurses in response to aggression shown towards them by other staff or patients.

Health Minister Lara Giddings says the state’s public hospitals have comprehensive security systems in place, including surveillance cameras and duress alarms. (news)
