Sign of the times
Everyone wants to be famous in one way or another. Whether you’re some redneck talking to a local news channel about the tornado that touched down in your trailer park or you’re that dumbass who walks in the background, everyone is trying to get on tv. Now becoming famous has become as simple as turning on your webcam. Is this the sign of the times? Are we that shallow of a species? Take for example the Chk chk boom girl. Appearing on a news interview about a reported shooting it turns out she made the whole thing up. Despite this, she turned out to be an Internet phenomenon. I guess it didn’t hurt that she was mildly pretty. Offers rolled in, and now what? It this all a little silly? What sort of message does this give to society? Perhaps we should stop watching tv and youtube videos and take a long hard look in the mirror. What have we become? Is this the sign of the times?
More ladies becoming street racers
A new breed of girl-racer hoons is putting lives at risk on Victorian roads.
Police are catching more female drivers pushing the limits in hotted-up sedans, sports cars and hatchbacks.
Experts say urgent research is needed to tackle the phenomenon.
At least 73 women have lost their cars to impoundment yards so far this year – about 10 a month.
That takes to 141 the number of female hoons caught since July 2006 when police confiscation powers came into force.
While women account for just 2.5 per cent of all hoon drivers, their numbers are on the rise. Girls as young as 16 are among those who have been caught smashing the speed limit, doing burn-outs and leading police on dangerous pursuits. (news)
Robert Yates guilty of underaged sex crime
The former manager of hit 1980s band Mi-Sex had sex with an underage girl he met on the internet after being stranded when his yacht was damaged in a storm, a Melbourne court has heard.
Robert Yates, 63, of Katoomba, in the NSW Blue Mountains, has pleaded guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl in an outer suburban motel after responding to her profile on a website called Adult Friend Finder.
Yates’ lawyer told the court his client became lonely and isolated after his yacht was anchored in Coffs Harbour, in NSW, for six months of repairs in April 2007.
During this time, he lived in a small hotel room and developed a pattern of drinking up to two bottles of wine each day, browsing the internet to combat his isolation, the court heard. (news)
Girl must have been in ‘excruciating pain’ before death
The doctor who conducted an autopsy on a 12-year-old girl who died in foster care has told a Northern Territory court she had the worst bone infection he had ever seen.
Dr Terence Sinton said Deborah Melville would have been in “excruciating pain” before she went into cardiac arrest, lying in the dirt backyard of her Palmerston home on July 12 last year.
A post-mortem examination found septicemia was the reason for the heart attack, caused by osteomyelitis, or a bone infection, stemming from a fracture in her thigh.
Sisters Toni Melville, 43, and Denise Reynolds, 42, have been charged with the manslaughter of their niece after they failed to seek medical treatment.
Defence Lawyer Jon Tippett QC told the Northern Territory Supreme Court in Darwin today infections could have “atypical” presentations. (news)

The Secret Life of The Veronicas was exposed yesterday – literally – after raunchy pictures of a girl believed to be one of the pop twins were splashed over an international porn site.
In a controversial scenario reminiscent of the recent sex scandals which soiled the reputations of US teen queens Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus, steamy shots of Jess Origliasso have been posted on porn website Fleshbot.com.
Cementing her status as the wilder of the two siblings, Jess – identified by her distinctive tattoo on her bare upper back – is pictured with a suggestive expression in the sepia-toned image.
A second picture, showing a Jess lookalike in a topless pose, is also posted on the site though a spokeswoman for The Veronicas stopped short of confirming the secondary topless shot was actually the Origliasso twin. (news)
