Headshot victim drives to hospital
A man has driven himself to hospital after being shot in the head during a fight outside a Melbourne service station. Police say a 25-year-old man who was shot in the back of the head by an unknown gunman and drove himself to Werribee Hospital after being left for dead on the Kings Rd nature strip in St Albans, the Herald Sun reports.
The shooting, which happened about 9.30pmn (AEST) last night, has police searcing for witnesses who may have seen the gunman and his accomplice flee the scene. (news)
Patients affected by radiation scandal grows to more than 800
The number of patients affected by a bungle in their radiation treatment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, has grown to more than 800.
An independent investigation is underway into radiation treatments for cancer patients at the RAH amid concerns that some were not getting an adequate dose for two years.
A check originally identified 720 patients who had been affected but further checks of hospital records have revealed another 114.
SA Health chief executive Tony Sherbon, said the independent review panel had already completed all of its field work, including interviews with staff and the checking of records.
“The review panel will now also look at these additional patients,” Dr Sherbon said. (news)
Comedian Bernie Mac passes away suddenly
The actor and comedian died from complications from pneumonia in a Chicago hospital. He was 50.
The award-winning actor was admitted to hospital with pneumonia on August 1, but his publicist issued a statement saying he was expected to recover.
Following Mac’s sudden death, his castmates in the three Ocean’s film expressed their grief.
“The world just got a little less funny,” Clooney said.
“He will be dearly missed.’
Pitt added: “I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with (Mac’s wife) Rhonda and their family. Bernie Mac, you are missed.”
Don Cheadle, who also starred in the Ocean’s trilogy, said: “This is a very sad day for many of us who knew and loved Bernie. He brought so much joy to so many. He will be missed but heaven just got funnier.” (news)
Hospital lets man sit 28 hours with severed fingers
A teenager whose fingers were severed in a workplace accident waited 28 hours for a bed at Royal Perth Hospital’s emergency department.
McKenneth Atkinson, 19, an apprentice mechanic from Pinjarra, was brought to RPH by ambulance about 3pm on Thursday.
He waited in the emergency department with parts of his severed fingers on ice until Friday night.
And after more than a day he was finally given a ward bed and prepared for surgery, only to have that delayed.
He was finally transferred to the Mount Hospital for surgery at about midday on Saturday.
The teenager’s father, Colin Atkinson, told The Sunday Times he was upset by the delay. (news)
Brad and Angelina welcome twins
Hollywood golden couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are the proud parents of new-born twins, a boy named Knox Leon and a girl called Vivienne Marcheline, a French hospital announced overnight.
Jolie, 33, gave birth to the twins during a half-hour caesarean operation at a maternity clinic in Nice on the French Riviera.
“Everything went smoothly. The children are doing very well, the mother is doing very well and the father is doing very well,” gynaecologist Michel Sussmann said.
The first photograph of the baby celebrities was sold to a US paper for $US11 million ($11.5 million), the regional Nice-Matin newspaper said, adding that the money would be given to a humanitarian cause. (news)
