Researchers pwn dengue fever

January 2, 2009 at 3:29 pm (Australia, News, health) (, , )

Thanks for you money Bill Gates! Researchers from the University of Queensland have made a breakthrough. A newly developed bacteria introduced into the dengue fever spreading mosquito population will cut down their evil virus spreading ways. The disease affects millions of people in third world countries each year.

By shortening the lifespan of mosquitoes they will be less likely to spread the disease. Hooray. (link)

Burping gets 19 yr charged at police station

September 4, 2008 at 9:22 pm (Australia, Crime, News) (, , , , , , )

“A 19 year old man who allegedly burped in the face of administrative staff at a north Queensland police station has been charged with being a public nuisance.” (news)

Now there’s being rude and being stupid. This man was both. He probably had a problem with authority and women. Hopefully a harsh punishment will teach him some manners and respect for the law. Swearing and being openly disrespectful to police officers in public is one thing but right inside of the police station? Wow, just plain dumb.

Games more important than porn on the Internet?

August 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm (Australia, News, Technology) (, , , , , , , , , , )

More Australians use the web to find games than adult content, even in Queensland where searches for “porn” and “sex” are the most popular.

Comparisons of search terms over time and broken down by region have been made available on Google’s latest data tool Insights, allowing users and advertisers to see which subjects are in demand and where.

For example, web searches including the terms “art” and “politics” are popular in the Northern Territory and Tasmania – but only “politics” is of interest in the ACT, where searches for “art” trail every other region.

The Veronicas saw a spike in interest this month after nude photos allegedly showing Jess Origliasso surfaced on an adult website, but overall searches for the band have been in decline since 2006. (news)

Farmers high suicide risk

August 18, 2008 at 7:16 pm (Australia, News, health) (, , , , , )

Farm workers are more than twice as likely to take their own lives as other people of working age, a Queensland study has shown.

Construction industry employees and road, rail and transport workers are also much more vulnerable to suicide than others aged 15 to 65 generally, researchers say.

Griffith University’s Jacinta Hawgood said Queensland Suicide Register data was analysed to profile the incidence in key occupational groups between 1990 and 2004.

She said the average suicide rate for working-aged Queenslanders was 11.9 per 100,000 people per year but agricultural workers recorded rates of 27 per 100,000 people. (news)

Wife catches husband cheating, goes to eBay, hilarity ensues

August 13, 2008 at 4:10 pm (Australia, News, Technology) (, , , , , , , )

A scorned Queensland woman is literally airing her husband’s dirty laundry on a global scale by auctioning his mistress’s knickers on eBay.

In a spiteful listing on eBay Australia, the jilted woman is auctioning off a pair of lacy black underpants “size humongous” and an empty condom wrapper “size small” found in her bed after her husband allegedly engaged in an extramarital affair with a woman named Kylie, the Courier Mail reported.

The seller, ‘Anna’ , says: “They are so huge I thought they may make someone a nice shawl or, even better, something for Halloween perhaps.” (news)
